I got a no registration ticket in my friends car. Who is this on?

Madge Voice: It's not your fault. If the brakes fail and you crash, it's not your fault.

Codi Manchel: Good question. The driver of a car is responsible to make sure the car is properly registered and has insurance. In most states insurance is assigned to the car. When I drive someones car I look at the tag sticker and ask the owner to show me the registration and insurance. Has happened where the person had insurance, but paper in the glove box was expired. You could contact a lawyer, that deals in traffic issues, he/she will know the best way to handle. Not sure there is such a thing as ticket fixers. I would have your friend get registration and insurance updated. I guess he would need to register the car in Nevada since he lives there. Then you both go to court, ask that about a diversion or first time offenders exception. May or may not be available, again, best to consult an attorney. This is where if you have a good record, have all paperwork in order, they l! ist it so it does not go on your driving record. Be prepared to pay that day. You still will most likely have to pay all fees and fines. Have cash or make sure sure you what type of payments they accept. Even if goes on driving record, not sure that matters to military. I am sure military people get speeding tickets, forget to renew registration, etc. a>...Show more

Kenneth Blacker: actually if the car is under his name he should have gotten the ticket for failure to register i would actually call the dmv or bmv and ask tht as it could differ from state to state

Shemeka Laker: The owner of the vehicle is fully and 100% responsible for anything that might happen when he allows an approved driver to use his vehicle. So the ticket is his responsibility. Same would be true if you had been in an accident. The owner of the vehicle would still be fully responsible and liable.

Marion Wieboldt: It's on you. The charge isn't owning a vehicle with expired tags, i! t's driving with expired tags. And you were the one driving. ! It goes on your record if you're convicted.I really doubt the military is interested in minor traffic tickets. They don't want no criminals in the service, but an itty-bitty traffic violation (which expired tags is) probably won't bother them at all. You can fight the ticket or maybe take a fix-it course to keep it off your record, but it's not a big deal. Your buddy would have to show up and testify that he didn't tell you the tags were expired, and maybe the judge would allow him to take the fall for the whole thing - maybe. And yes, your buddy definitely wants to get his tags renewed. Before you get all 'you can't handle the truth' with this in court (sorry, couldn't resist), find out if it's worth fighting for in the first place. Like I said, this is a really minor charge and I don't think it's going to affect your life in any way, so why bother fighting something purely on principle? Only get into it if you've really got something to lose....Show more

Matt ! Tiry: Sorry dude. While it's not your car, YOU are the one who got caught driving a car with expired registration. You BOTH need to appear in court and talk to the Judge.
