Does anyone work 7 on/7 off jobs? Are you willing to commute longer in those cases?

Victor Macallister: I really can't give much advice that you would deem useful, but then again I doubt anyone else could either! It really is your decision. I would avoid heavy traffic at all costs, even if I had to get to the job a couple hours early! I also had a "commuting" job (high pressure production line management) where I would sleep in the office on occasion, or rent a motel rather than make the drive!Basically, you do what you have to do! Go with the better job and the commute will sort of take care of itself.I did change professions. I now work for myself, by myself! My commute is now about 100 feet ONE WAY, EVERY DAY! (unless the boss tells me he doesn't want to work that day!). Make a living, nowhere what I used to, but I am happy!...Show more

Hilton Paiva: Lets see what is the real question. Do you commute the standard ten days every two weeks Or do you commute 7 days and then have seven days to be off .You could say cut down your daycare needs in half if you have kids. Will you save on gas. Probably. Unless you plan on shopping every day going for errands every day you have 15 days off a month most get 9 You have six days off extra what is a day off worth to you? Would you pay $5 in extra gas maybe $20 or an hours lost time driving to have a day at the park with your child or your spouse.Or to go fishing or whatever else you might want to do.It is not the total cost of commute. Just the added cost and benefit of a different schedule. MOST 12 hour sh! ifts are not at rush hour so you have a faster commute than mo! st others. Is an extra 30 minutes commuting worth an extra day or two off to you is the real question. Your work day is long you basically work and sleep for a week the reward is an extra three days off..There are other ways to schedule a two week rotation of 12 hour shifts to give 7 day a week.work coverage. You are paired with someone else that has the opposite schedule.working 2 on 2 off three on and then 2 off 2 on and three off does the same thing. You have every other weekend off you have every other Wednesday off and so on. You work 7 out of 14 you get 15 days off a monthHow you combine your work days together is between you and management and the scheduler. To work every other day for a few minutes more commute time is a reasonable trade off for most. In particular those with small children and a working spouse. Your daycare needs are cut in half.If you are a single parent getting the longer day care coverage is not easy.Other benefits things like a Doctors appointment ! can be made for any day of the week not needing to take time off work. Take your car for servicing or whatever. A home repairman, the delivery of something. You have extra days off to accommodate these things. Maybe you even go as the chaperone on that school field trip with your kids. You normally miss because you worked the school days with the 9-5 schedule....Show more
