But note if you're looking for software that typically writes data/media etc to a dvd. That's not what handbrake does, it takes movie dvd's etc & converts it to digital format. For general burning you'll need different software.

It's a very good program for that, and no, it doesn't contain any viruses.For burning DVDs I use ImgBurn. There's a lot of others out there, too, like CDBurnerXP. Both of those are free.You might actually be looking for DVD ripping software (which makes a copy of a DVD). I usually use DVD Shrink for that. It will take a commercial DVD, decrypt it, and re-encode it to fit on a single-layer DVD (that's the "shrink" part).
