Fermin Tara: President Obama wants car makers to do exactly that. But his energy policies have failed. US taxpayers have invested over 100 billion dollars in "green energy" during his tenure as President without producing a single result. We have NOTHING to show for our 100 billion dollars. Why? The answer is the same answer to your question.US auto makers (and every other business) are profit driven. That's what a capitalistic society does. Their motivation is not to make clean energy or develop a new technology, as desireable as those goals are. It's simply to make money for it's stock holders. When a new technology advances to the point where manufacturers can realistically develop it in a way to be profitable, then you will see that technology developed. An electric battery is e! nergy chemically stored, hydrogen is energy chemically stored, gasoline and diesel are also energy chemically stored. We know how to synthesize gasoline and diesel from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gases called syngas, it's actually how we meet the US federal ultra low sulfur diesel requirements by mixing high sulfur diesel with synthetic diesel ( Shell's GTL plant ). We currently get our syngas from natural gas and coal but it can come from anything that burns including trash and dried sewage. It can also come from CO2 and H2O which Sandia Labs does with a solar furnace in their CR5. So we can actually run on any energy source we want to without changing a single vehicle.However automobile companies are investing in electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell cars because like tail fins, car colours, the station wagon to minivan to SUV and now back to minivan transitions and the hybrid and flexfuel cars, it drives consumer demand replacing existing vehicl! es with new vehicles.
