Jade Ohno: it depends. any cell phone you buy (in most cases) are activated then. if this is a second hand phone, you must find out if it has a block on the esn ( esn is the serial number) every phone has it, it is like every car has a serial number.a stolen car cant get plates, just like a cell phone will not get activated if a block has been put on to the esn. Now if you mail ordered the phone from a company , there should be a "perk" to activate w/ a company. often that company will be more than happy to activate, and give a bonus of sorts to have you end the contract with Verizon. verizon also will do what it takes to win your continued relationship, they are all to willing to give you just about anything for you to sign any contract. in this case it may be a 3 year to assume the part you have left w/ new. my advice is go in a store front around the end of the month ( when QUOTA! ) needs to be met, take your new phone and ask for the kit and kaboodle, you will get a great deal. good luck.
